From Albert Sinfield, Golf Manager: September has seen some perfect golfing weather with many of you taking full advantage of the golf course and clubhouse this month. I would like to thank the members that joined some of the Redlibbets team on Monday 13th for our divoting evening. We had 22 people out on the course and as a group divoted 12 fairways. It was a pleasure spending time with you out on the course and I hope to see you again at the next event we run.
I have a quick thank you from Mike Rees, our Assistant Golf Manager, for those members who sponsored him in his Brighton Marathon efforts in September.
Mike said: “Many thanks to everybody who sponsored me in my Brighton Marathon run. It was tough but I didn’t stop and it was nice of the organisers to somehow add 580 yards to the course – making it nearly 27 miles.
“My time just crept over 5 hours but the most important figure was that I almost raised £1,300 for Prostate Cancer UK – such a great charity. The crowds were amazing and it was a memorable day.
“The third time I have run Brighton and it gets better every year.”
Next up for Mike is Bournemouth in a couple of weeks – but just the half marathon this time! He will also be back on the start line at Brighton next April.
Congratulations to Redlibbets members Andy Burton and David Fowler, who won the Kent Veterans League’s annual Pairs Championship.
Forty-four teams from all over the region competed at Broome Park for what is also known as the Golfstream Challenge Trophy.
League sponsor Derek Richford, of Golfstream Trolleys, is pictured presenting Andy and David with the winning trophy
They finished with an outstanding 44 points, two ahead of their nearest rivals. The delighted winners were presented with the crystal trophy and £200 vouchers.
KGVL secretary Barry Sweetman added: “It was an exceptional day, played in the true spirit of golf/”
Welcome to the club:
Join us in welcoming Lauren Stringer back to the team. Lauren has recently re-joined the club as part of our front of house team. Lauren spent the past two and a half years in the elderly care sector but following a couple of shifts to help the team made the choice to come back to the club to continue the fantastic job she was completing before. Lauren is excited to see you all in the clubhouse soon.
CONGRATULATIONS TO COACH OLIVIA!
Olivia has just secured her dream place of work at world renowned Emirates golf club in Dubai, home of the Dubai desert classic. Olivia will be working under the Peter Cowan golf academy and will be leaving Redlibbets mid-October to pursue this coaching role.
“I have had an amazing time so far working at Redlibbets and I look forward to seeing you all again in the Summer of 2022 on my return”
From Damon Kirk, Course Manager: September has been an incredibly busy month for Golf as well as maintenance on the course. This month has seen the Club Championship and Club Masters take place with a high number of societies and a shotgun start to contend with. The setup for the Club Championship and Masters was an intense period of preparation for us but the Maintenance Team worked incredibly hard to achieve the expected standard for these events.
We have continued our aeration program by verti-draining all of the greens using a Wiedenmann Terra Spike GXi8 with 250mm x 8mm tines. The equipment is set to enable the tine to enter the surface of the green at an angle which causes a heaving motion within the rootzone to a depth of 120mm. This action aids massively aids aeration and decompaction, improving root growth and density.
After completing the verti-draing we needed to topdress (sand) the greens, ensuring the holes were filled with fresh material. This helps with drainage, thatch control and promoting a smooth and level playing surface.
Our goal is always to enhance the playing conditions of all the surfaces, and ensure the golfer receives the quality expected with Get Golfing. This is why we have begun to incorporate an overseeding program of sowing Browntop Bent grass seed into the greens profile to improve its playability, health and overall condition. We will continue this program next spring to further build this species numbers within the existing established sward.
We seeded in 2 diagonal directions with a Redexim Overseeder 30 1275 incorporating 5 grams of Bent seed per meter squared in each pass, giving a total of 10 grams per meter squared. The benefits of using Bent grass within the sward is to improve the immunity of the greens to certain diseases over the Autumn, Winter and early Spring period.
Please join me in congratulating Jan Kidd on her hole in one earlier this month on the 15th hole in the Ladies Medal.
We also have 25 tickets left to our Christmas event, the highlight being a tribute act for Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, check out the poster below:

From Stuart Williams, Community Development Officer (Education, SEND and Communities), Get Golfing: For this month’s newsletter I thought I would introduce the fantastic team we have here at Get Golfing managing the community events at your sites:
Faydra Mitchell – Community Events Coordinator East
Faydra has a passion for all things charity and community, from volunteering with local groups to running music festivals. She is a mum to 2 amazing children, and her life is never quiet, but always fun! I love to be involved in all things to do with the elderly or children, especially those with SEN or disabilities, and my real passion is providing activities and entertainment for the community. I’m lucky to be involved in some great music festivals like Local and Live and Tonbridge Calling, and to me there is nothing better than seeing people having a good time at an event you have provided.
Yvonne Brooke – Community Events Coordinator West
An experienced golf and leisure operator I am really passionate about encouraging more women and girls to play sport. I have created the Ladies Golf Lounge, a Facebook Group for female golfers, which now has nearly 6,500 members.
The group has given me a platform to support and promote a number of sport related charities, give a voice to women’s golf and allowed me to work with a diverse community which has been amazing and something I’m really proud of.
My husband and I have 2 children, a 7 year old boy and 9 year old girl, so most of our life is spent as a taxi service (I’m sure many of you reading can relate!) ferrying them around to various clubs, birthday parties and playdates. Hence, I regularly escape to the golf course for some peace and quiet and to recharge my batteries!
Stuart Williams – Group Community Development
Having worked in education and community sport for over 25 years I have a passion for creating safe, enjoyable and engaging events and opportunities. I enjoy building programs that make humans feel better about themselves and am passionate that we at Get Golfing have an amazing impact on our local communities. I want to create great environments where people (visitors and staff) can help each other, enjoy our sites and contribute to building a better society.
Looking ahead to 2022
Adopt a school
We will be announcing the primary and special schools that each site will be adopting as partners for 2022 where we will be offering a wide variety of activities for both students and staff. Golf of course will be included but there will also be music, art, drama, a venue for staff training and our great TAP program that targets FSM & PP children.
Group Charity Adoption
Our group charity has now been selected for 2022 with the Anthony Nolan Trust partnering with us. More information with both an education, awareness, and recruitment campaign to roll out next year and an exciting pro-am series planned.
Local Community Groups
The team will be working closely with site teams to identify a local group or charity to support for 2022 and whilst we can assist with fundraising, we would prefer groups that can utilise our beautiful spaces (for free) to enhance or expand their provision to local residents
NHS Blood Donation Partnership
Over the last 6 months we have hosted Recruitment and Awareness campaigns for blood donation. This month Arkley GC host the team where anyone can come along, find out how they can become a donor and find out their blood type. The event is on Sunday 3rd October and there is also a fun pairs scramble competition if you would like to play this hidden gem.
