Dear Golfer,

From Mike Rees, Golf Manager: Welcome to our August newsletter, which I have taken the lead on while General Manager David Harris spends a few weeks on site at another of Get Golfing’s courses at Hampton Court Palace. If you need to contact me with any questions regarding your club membership, please pop into the office or send an email via [email protected]

The recent glorious weather means Redlibbets has seen another busy month in July. Members and visitors alike have taken advantage of the fantastic conditions produced by Course Manager Richard Covey and his dedicated team of seven staff. Please remember, if you are heading out to play, pick up a pair of gloves in the unlikely event you need to use a bunker rake.

Course maintenance

From Richard Covey, Course Manager: Due to Covid-19 and major competitions being moved to August, maintenance this month will be light. The week commencing August 10th will see the greens staff pencil tining the greens (not hollow coring). Tining increases root growth, root development and will aerate the root zone which is important in these warm conditions.

We will also be carrying out a light vertical cut, this process removes excessive lateral growth and encourages vertical growth which gives you a truer, quicker putting surface.

Lastly, we will be top dressing to improve the smoothness of the playing surface as well as increasing the firmness of the greens, which we will benefit from heading in to the winter months.

Afternoon tea on the terrace

Our downstairs set-up continues to prove popular with Members and all our visitors with Head Chef James Hopcroft and his colleagues providing outstanding food and service from our BBQ.

In this beautiful weather, why not also enjoy afternoon tea on the terrace or our Gentlemen’s Platter, priced £18.95pp. Contact [email protected] for more information.

And please don’t forget our popular Surf & Turf BBQ lunch available on Fridays and at weekends, priced at £15pp for adults and £12 for children. Valerie is again the staff member to contact and she will book you in.

Competitions

Attracting record numbers of players, our competitions are coming thick and fast from now on. The opening event in the Order of Merit Race to Le Touquet – the St George’s Day Cup – was won by Karen Taylor (15hcp) with a cracking nett 67 to finish one shot clear of Louisa Cluett (26hcp) and Jon Beer (17hcp). You can see all the results here.

Robbie Howe and Rory Simmons were the clear winners of the Billings Trophy last month. The pairs event saw them finish three shots clear of Guy Phillips and Vincent Whittingham.

Looking forward, Saturday, August 8th sees the Foundation Cup, with the OCO Cup on Sunday, August 16th. Don’t forget the two-round club championships are Saturday 29th-Sunday 30th.

Junior news

We are getting a steady number of new Junior Members and we are looking to grow this section as the future lifeblood of the club. We are very keen that they learn the etiquette of golf both on the course and in the clubhouse, so they will be put under the watchful eye of Pros. If you know of any young person who might be interested in joining, please pass on details of our new Junior Membership category, which is not only FREE but offers a variety of discounts on food, drink and in pro shop. More details are here.

Hole-in-one

Finally, congratulations to our popular Gill Crabb, who celebrated her second hole-in-one by acing the 15th hole during Saturday’s Ladies’ Weekend Medal. She is pictured, front right, with fellow lady members: Jayne Garfield-Field, Lynn Craven (left to right back row) and Tracey White (front left).

Best wishes from everyone at Redlibbets Golf Club.
